This term we will be having a design and technology focused unit based around bridges. We will be having great fun designing and making our own bridge structures!
English:
In English, we will be deepening our understanding of fiction text exploring figurative language and cohesive devices. We will have daily opportunities to practise our grammar skills and continue to practise our spellings knowledge. After our descriptive writing, we will explore non-fiction writing. We will explore the features of explanation writing before unpicking the features and then planning and writing our own explanation writing.
Love to Read:
We will be reading The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett - a fantastic story set in Discworld. I know you will all love it!
Design Technology:
This half term our focus is Design Technology. Our class will be focussing on Bridges. We will start the topic with a memorable experience exploring structures using different cardboard and cardboard tubes to create the most stable bridges. We will then test the support structures using different weights to see if our bridges will withstand heavier objects and different ‘weather’ conditions. Later on in the term, we will explore how we can make our own structures focussing on a design criteria and learning about famous archaeologists who have made bridges. We will also explore our local surroundings looking at Iron Bridge and its history.
Maths:
In maths, we will be exploring geometry looking at perimeter and area. The children will have the opportunity to learn about polygons, regular polygons and rectilinear shapes. They will then apply this knowledge to explore the perimeter and area of these shapes. Having studied perimeter, we will be deepening our understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions. Throughout the half term, we will continue to practise our arithmetic skills and there will be regular opportunities to consolidate prior knowledge.
Science:
In Science, we will be learning all about Earth; we will compare the time of day at different places on the Earth and create simple models of the solar system. There will be regular opportunities to recap on prior knowledge through the use of flashbacks.
RE:
In RE, we will explore Sikhs and different religious initiation ceremonies where children will be able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the different religions. There will be regular opportunities to recap on prior knowledge through the use of flashbacks. In addition to this, there will be regular opportunities for the children to pause and reflect on their own ideas and beliefs.
