Our Christian value for this term is Friendship:
Friendship is about spending time with people that you can have fun with. Friends share, play together and laugh with each other. A good friend can cheer you up when you are sad and be there for you in times of need.
We will be learning all about friendship in our class worship sessions alongside the RE topic ‘Sikh Khalsa’ Where we will consider the question ‘Why do some Sikhs choose to become part of the Khalsa?’
This half term, the foundation subject we will be studying is Design and Technology, our focus is ‘Cam Creations’, where we will be learning all about Cam mechanisms. To fully immerse the children into this unit, we will be starting with our memorable experience, LEGO WEDO, when the children will have the opportunity to explore Cam mechanisms and their movement. This will lead into their key design question - How can we create an appealing moving mechanical toy model that will captivate children’s interest?
Our Love 2 Read text will be Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, a beautifully written novel where: Lyra and her animal daemon live a carefree life amongst the scholars of Jordan College, Oxford. Yet the destiny that awaits her will take her far from her home to the magical frozen lands of the Arctic, amongst the witch-clans and ice-bears.
In English, we will start off with explanation texts, challenging the children to really think about mechanisms and how we create them, we will then move onto narrative where we use the music for ‘Titanium’ to engage, enthuse and inspire the children’s writing ending the half term with a poetry unit studying and learning ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan Poe.
This half term we will revisit and embed the children’s knowledge of the four operations before moving on to further develop their knowledge of fractions, finishing the half term with position and directions.
In Science, we will explore light and how it travels and reflects. Outdoor PE on a Thursday afternoon will focus on Hockey and Indoor PE on a Wednesday afternoon will have a dance focus, on these days, the children should attend school in their PE kit in line with the school uniform policy (please ensure that they have a waterproof coat for a Thursday afternoon).
The children will continue to be set homework each Friday with the expectation it is handed in for marking the following Friday. Each week, the children should be completing four ‘at home’ reads, which should be recorded in their reading diaries and initialled by an adult from home - if this happens the children are entitled to 10 minutes free time on a Monday afternoon. Each Friday, we set new spellings to practise at home and then we have a test in school each Friday, the children now have an EdShed password that they can use to log onto EdShed. They can then practise that week’s spellings, they can even test themselves each Friday if they wish too.
We would like to thank you for all of your continued support- we have had a fabulous first half term and we are thoroughly enjoying working with the children and look forward to what the next half term brings.
