Year 5's project was Forceful Ferris Wheels where they followed the design, make evaluate process to create a moving Ferris Wheel. Based on the book The Boy who Swam with Piranhas by David Almond, the children learnt about a variety of fairground rides and evaluated their safety features. The children learnt about the inventor of the Ferris Wheel: George Washington Gale Ferris Junior which inspired them to create their own Ferris Wheel. Before conducting their final project, the children carried out Focussed Practical Tasks including making their own safety carriage, considering the features that would help to keep everyone safe. After evaluating their safety carriages, the children created their moving Ferris Wheels. This linked into their Computing lessons: the children programmed Lego We Do this linked to a motor on the Ferris Wheel, which in turn made it move.
