Year 6’s project was Moving cam Toys linked to Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights.  The children learned all about Cam mechanisms and how different types of cams can affect the linear or rotary motion that the mechanism produces.  During the topic, the children completed a Focussed Practical Task (FPT), which enabled them to practise with Cam movement and visualise the type of motion that they wanted their toys to have.  All the children designed and made toys around a Christmas theme, the aim being that a young child would be entertained over the Christmas period.  They all produced the most amazing toys that move. During evaluation, the children felt that their toys would have benefitted from being made from another material such as plastic and could have been secured with metal than rather than glue.
