At Wrockwardine Wood CE Junior School we use Read Write Inc to support children who have not passed their phonics screening in the year 2 retake. For a more detailed explanation of the programme please click on the following link:

The Read Write Inc programme uses a variety of sound charts to support the children's learning of the phonetic sounds. Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

The Fresh start programme is used in year 6. Fresh Start teaches older struggling readers to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. It is rooted in phonics and uses age-appropriate decodable texts. Students learn the English alphabetic code: the 150+ graphemes that represent 44 speech sounds.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively stories and non-fiction texts are both age appropriate and closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and as students re-read the texts, their fluency increases.
