Autumn 1
Our Christian value for this half term is Compassion which we will be learning about in our class worship sessions, upper key stage assemblies and alongside the RE topic ‘Creation and Science: conflicting or complementary?’
This half term, our foundation subject is History, and we will be learning all about trench warfare where we will be delving into the history of World War 1, learning about what life was like and what makes this period in history one of the most important modern historical events to take place. To fully immerse the children into this unit we will be welcoming a history workshop which will give them the opportunity to get into role and character and learn about air raid shelters and the expectations of conscription and soldiers going to war.
Our Love 2 Read text, will be Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, a beautifully written novel about the life of a soldier throughout World War 1. We will do lots of ‘echo reading’ during our reading sessions to ensure all children can access the text and ensure they understand what is happening in the book ready to answer a range of comprehension questions.
In English, we will start off with some descriptive writing, challenging the children’s vocabulary knowledge and then move on to war poetry and persuasive speeches. We will focus on figurative language and really try and paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Alongside English, we will be concentrating on handwriting skills with daily opportunities to improve the legibility and formation of letters and numbers. Grammar will also be covered daily to ensure the children have regular opportunities to be exposed to SATs style questions ready for their SATs later on in May.
In Maths, we will start off by revisiting place value in Maths to ensure core fluency skills then we will move on to the four operations (Addition, Subtraction, Division and Multiplication). Fridays will have an arithmetic focus where the children will have regular opportunities to practise a range of key skills taught in Year 6 really focussing on fractions, decimals and percentages.
In Science, we will learn about electricity, making and testing simple circuits building on the children’s knowledge from year 4.
Other useful information:
PE Days:
Outdoor: Monday PM
Indoor: Friday PM
Please ensure you children come to school dressed in the appropriate PE kit with little or minimal logos on their clothing.
Homework and learning at home
During the first week, the children will be issued with their reading diaries. We ask that the children read at home four times a week – please sign or initial these entries. The children’s reading focus for the week along with their spellings will be recorded in their diaries for you to access. The children will also be issued with weekly homework – we will send more information regarding this in the first week of September. All children will have access to TTRockStars and Numbots where they can practise their multiplication and maths skills at home in a fun interactive way.
Here in Year 6, we are thoroughly looking forward to working with the children and cannot wait to begin their year 6 journey with them
Once we start the term, children may be invited to attend after school or before school tuition sessions to build on their confidence and skills and prepare them ready for their SATs in May. These are all free of charge and are a great way for your children to work in smaller groups to address misconceptions or errors of difficulty.
