‘What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk
humbly with your God’ (Micah 6:8)
We are Agents for Change! This means that our pupils are encouraged to be outspoken about injustice when they find it and to question 'Why?' and 'What can we do to make a change for the better?' This is fostered and encouraged throughout our curriculum, particularly in PSHEE and through our half-termly Awareness Days, where pupils are given the opportunity to be Agents for Change when learning about national and international themes such as International Women's Day and Black History Month. These special Awareness Days aim to broaden our pupil's understanding of the world around them and inspire them to become Agents for Change.
To further support this, we have a weekly Current Affairs Collective Worship session in which the children learn about local and global issues, using Picture News as a basis for discussions. These sessions have led to children's developing awareness of range of issues and to them actively campaigning for improvements. For example, a group of Year 5 children were inspired to plan and lead Collective Worship about the conflict in Ukraine in solidarity with those suffering. More recently, our Spiritual Ambassadors wanted to raise awareness of the current Middle East crisis, so led a worship on this and subsequently held a cake sale to raise money for the urgent Save the Children fund. Our Safety Squad have been Agents for Change through their very successful 'Bin the Banter' Campaign, where they created posters to display around school and led Collective Worship on the dangers of 'banter'. They even created a presentation and delivered it to a team of professionals at Telford and Wrekin council, who were extremely impressed with their wisdom and courage! Through the success of this campaign, we have seen an improvement in the social interactions of our pupils, with all understanding the importance of being Active Bystanders to Speak Out and Stay Safe.
As a staff team, we are committed to developing citizenship in preparation for life within our local, national and global communities and engage in social action for change, which the children embrace. Our Christian vision and values underpin all of this work as children are nurtured to show courage in their support for others in our global community as well as thankfulness for the people that surround them. They show compassion for everyone, whatever their faith or background. They show wisdom in their efforts to make the world a better place.
While courageous advocacy at Wrockwardine Wood CE Junior School goes far beyond fund-raising, pupils, staff, Governors and parents/carers actively support a range of charities locally, nationally and globally; we work tirelessly to make a difference to other peoples’ lives. Charitable organisations supported recently include Telford Food Bank and Save the Children. We also take part in national initiatives for charities such as Children in Need, Comic Relief and Macmillan Cancer Support.
